For years, we’ve seen how dentistry can help people live healthier lives, not just by keeping teeth healthy and clean, but by providing solutions to such conditions as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and obstructive sleep apnea. At Michelle Munoz, DDS, we’re not just passionate about dental health; we’re passionate about overall health, which is why we decided to grow our practice by adding a
TMJ and Sleep Therapy Center.
The Problem With TMJ
TMJ disorders can cause debilitating pain. Just a few of the symptoms include:
- Facial swelling
- Jaw pain
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Ear aches and ringing of the ears
- The inability to open your mouth wide or lockjaw
- Pain while chewing, speaking, yawning, etc.
- Clicking or popping sounds that emanate from the jaw
Because other health conditions share some of these symptoms, TMJ disorders often go undiagnosed, leaving patients in excruciating pain that never seems to subside.
The Problem With Sleep Apnea
While sleep apnea is most commonly associated with snoring, there are other side effects that can be detrimental to your overall health, such as:
- Increased risk of heart attack
- Increased risk of hypertension and stroke
- Increased risk of diabetes
- Increased risk of accidents as a result of sleepiness
- Increased risk of mood disorders such as depression and anxiety
Ultimately, any one of these side effects can be deadly. Much like TMJ disorders, sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed. Sufferers feel perpetually tired and begin to experience severe health problems and never learn why.
